As some of you may know from watching our film Global Addiction, Travis has spent some time jumping dirt bikes into the Grand Canyon. Apparently he didn’t get it out of his system because we recently went back to the canyon for more. This time, Travis convinced fellow Crew members Jim DeChamp, Jolene Van Vugt and veteran base jumper Eric “Rubberneck” Roner to join the fun. At one point there were three people (Travis, Jim and Jolene) jumping into the canyon at the same time from three different ramps. The last jump of the day was terrifying. Travis did a backflip-720, ditched the bike and proceeded to do a couple more front flips. When he came out of the last flip he realized that he had passed his dirt bike which was now directly above him. Pulling the shoot would have meant getting smashed by the bike. His only choice was to try to fly away from the bike as much as he could before hitting the ground. Things didn’t quite work out as planned. Travis got away from the bike but he hit the canyon wall before his shoot fully deployed. Lucky for Travis, he hit a very steep wall which made him tumble and slow down. Flat ground would have been serious injury if not death. His worst injuries came from rolling through a cactus field. he still has inch long cactus quills stuck in the flesh of his arms. One of the pictures shows Jolene picking quills out of his body. Other pictures include Crum getting into the Native culture and the pile of mangled bikes that we pulled up from the bottom of the canyon.
