Todd Meyn Sticks a BMX World First in New Zealand

February 15, 2017

Todd Meyn is starting 2017 off all according to plan. He’s putting in extra work between shows and in practice and pushing himself hard every time he’s on his bike. It shows. He killed it all through the New Zealand tour and closed out his run by sticking a World First in practice before the final show: a frontflip tailwhip catch tailwhip. He’d been trying it for a year, he says, and nearly landed it in practice in New Plymouth, but when he got to the top of the ramp for a second try, it started to rain. After a year of waiting, one more day was no problem. “I came back the following day and got it second go,” he says. Let’s take a look, but read on for more details on what makes this trick so challenging, and watch Todd’s edit below to see a closer angle and the full backstory of the final couple attempts.

“I’ve always wanted to do a frontflip double tailwhip, but I couldn’t figure out how to get back on the bike without turning 90 degrees and landing sideways,” Todd says. “So I tried it by catching it instead, and it worked!” He makes it sound easy, but remember, this was a year in the making. “The scariest part is, I don’t want to frontflip too quick off the start, otherwise when I kick the second tailwhip it will just stop, so I make sure just to relax with it, because if you rush it sometimes your foot will get in the way and it will hit the frame and stop the second whip,” he explains. OK, cool, piece of cake. “If you rotate too much of the frontflip before you kick the second whip, it will stop and you will belly flop, which I can tell you is not fun.” OK, never mind. But here’s where Todd’s relentlessly positive attitude gives him an edge in his job. “Before I go with any scary trick, I just remind myself to relax and believe everything will work out,” he says.
