  • BMX stands for "bicycle motocross." BMX racing is a cycling sport originally inspired by motocross racing. Young cyclists saw how much fun the motocross bikers were having and wanted to create their own extreme races. Some riders added tricks, whips, and flips inspired by skateboarders, and freestyle BMX was born!

BMX racing dates back to the late 1960s and early 1970s in California when young riders raced their small-framed, "ape-hanger" handlebar bikes along dirt tracks. The first national BMX race was held in 1974. In just a few years, riders were flipping, riding half-pipes, and pulling tricks off handrails. Nowadays, competitors participate in either BMX racing, freestyle BMX, or BMX big air.

We showcase freestyle BMX in our Nitro Circus shows, which is considered on of the most extreme action sports because of its high degree of risk and danger. The speed height, and difficulty of the moves all make it an exhilarating and dangerous experience!

BMX bikes come in many different varieties, but they all have small frames, a single gear, thick tires, and high handlebars for extra comfort. Typically, they are made out of steel or aluminum. Bike wheels vary from 16" to 26" in size.

  • FMX stands for Freestyle Motocross, one of the most thrilling and gravity-defying disciplines showcased in Nitro Circus. It’s all about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on a dirt bike. Nitro Circus athletes take FMX to new heights with massive jumps and jaw-dropping stunts, performing tricks that blend precision, creativity, and fearless innovation.

FMX emerged in the mid-1990s when motocross riders began experimenting with tricks during practice jumps. Since then, FMX has evolved dramatically, becoming a global phenomenon with increasingly complex and dangerous tricks. Nitro Circus took FMX to the next level by showcasing not just record-breaking feats but also the camaraderie and creativity behind the sport.

Unlike traditional motocross racing, FMX focuses on delivering unbelievable tricks, style, and showmanship. Nitro Circus has been home to some of the biggest moments in FMX history, including Travis Pastrana’s groundbreaking double backflip and other first-ever tricks.

  • Freestyle scootering, also known as simply riding, was born about 20 years ago and has gained traction in skate parks around the world over the past 10 years. It is an action sport that's a marriage of skateboarding and BMX freestyle. The riders perform freestyle tricks or stunts on specially designed, professional kick scooters. Nitro Circus athlete Ryan Williams is an innovator in the growing sport of freestyle scootering.

  • WCMX stands for wheelchair motocross, which is like BMX, but with four wheels instead of two. Nitro Circus athlete, Aaron "Wheelz" Fotheringham is the pioneer of the sport. It combines elements of skateboarding, BMX, and motocross, allowing wheelchair users to navigate ramps, rails, and jumps.

  • From lounge chairs to boogie boards, Nitro Circus will make it fly! Trust us when we tell you that you can send almost anything hurtling down a ramp...because we've tried. If you can stand, sit, or lay on an object, it may just be perfect for a Nitro Circus contraption.

Nitro Circus athletes like Dusty Wygle and Ethen Roberts ride and jump all sorts of crazy contraptions to wow the crowd. You name it, and they will try to ride it! Sometimes they land it, sometimes they don't, but it's always hilarious fun for the crowd!

Some of the contraptions we've tried out include skis, toy cars, shopping carts, hospital gurneys, a rocking horse, and many more.

  • The biggest part of any Nitro Circus Live show is the Nitro Bomb, with every rider in the air at once. Debuting in 2010 in Brisbane, Nitro's signature trick must be witnessed live to experience the full glory.

It is one thing to watch it on Television, but live and in person, it is like seeing a UFO. You can never fully appreciate it until you see it live.
