Ahead of his attempt to break the motorcycle distance jump record for the “Evel Live 2” television special, Axell Hodges has been injured and will have to withdraw from the July 7 event. The renowned moto star severely injured both ankles in a crash while training. Hodges had been slated to challenge two records, including an attempt to jump farther than 378 feet, 9 inches, the current distance record set by Robbie Maddison in 2011.
HISTORY and Nitro Circus have updated the format for the highly-anticipated TV special, which will air live at 9pm ET/6pm PT. Multiple X Games medalist Vicki Golden will aim to break the firewall record by riding through 13 flaming wooden boards. She will be the first woman to attempt to break the standing record of 12, which was set in 2007. In addition to Golden’s bid for a new record, the revamped show will feature exclusive footage of the crash that sidelined Hodges and in-depth analysis on the dangers involved in these types of stunts. At 8pm ET/5pm PT, HISTORY will air a one-hour behind-the-scenes special highlighting 2018’s “Evel Live,” in which Travis Pastrana recreated three of Evel Knievel’s iconic stunts in Las Vegas.
Hodges’ injuries are a reminder that, while these stunts are an exciting spectacle and amazing to witness, even with state-of-the-art safety precautions firmly in place they still carry a high degree of risk and are incredibly difficult feats of athleticism that are by no means a sure thing.
“Having a crash ahead of something you’ve been working so hard toward just plain sucks,” Hodges said. “The team and I were making a lot of progress during testing and the distances we were approaching looked good for Sunday’s event. Unfortunately, I made a mistake in air and wasn’t able to adjust in time for landing. I’m shocked I’m not in worse shape and feel extremely grateful to have been able to get up from this crash.”
